Clarke doesn't hate you, Abby. She's just - she's just strong-willed... like her mom. You gave her that. That's how you're protecting her. And that's what will keep her alive on the ground.
— Jackson to Abby about Clarke. [src]

Dr. Eric Jackson is a recurring character in the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh seasons. He is portrayed by cast member Sachin Sahel and debuts in the series premiere.

He has a stable friendship and working relationship with Abigail Griffin. He was a medical officer on the Ark. Throughout the series he mostly works as a doctor and helps to treat his patients. After the death of Abby, he acts as both Wonkru and Sanctum's primary doctor and one of Clarke and Indra's trusted inner circle. With the brewing conflict with Sheidheda, Jackson officially appears to remain a neutral party or to submit to the Dark Commander's rule while secretly supplying Murphy's group.

After the Transcendence of humanity, Jackson decides to join Miller and the rest of Clarke's surviving friends in returning to their mortal forms to live out the rest of their lives on a regenerated Earth, so that Clarke will not be alone forever. He became part of a last group on Earth, which is now a habitable planet again.

Early Life[]

He was born on the Ark to his mother Mary Jackson. After his mother died in his arms, due to a terrible illness, he became a doctor.

Throughout the Series[]

In Pilot, Jackson and Abby theorize that the two Delinquents who died were killed on impact because their tiles went black at the same time they lost communication. Jackson later helps Abby operate on the Chancellor after he had been shot, but Jackson refuses to break the law by giving the Chancellor more anesthesia, even when it had to be done.

Jackson and Abby are monitoring the Delinquents' when Jackson makes a discovery that causes them to realize that the Delinquents' found water on the ground. However, they are interrupted by Marcus Kane and Commander Shumway who arrest Abby for the overuse of medical supplies to save Jaha's life. Though Jackson orders Abby to be quiet, she defiantly tells Kane that she used what was necessary to keep Kane from becoming Chancellor, shocking Jackson at her defiance. Abby angrily confronts Kane over his choices, including executing her husband and arresting her daughter and, undeterred, he sentences Abby to die the next morning.

The next morning, Jackson and Callie Cartwig accompany Abby as she prepares to be floated. Jackson sadly watches as Abby hugs Callie goodbye and as the airlock door closes, Abby orders him to use the wristbands to try to find a way to communicate with the people on the ground with the help of Jacapo Sinclair. As the door closes, Jackson complies with Abby's request that he nod if he understands. However, the execution is interupted by Jaha who pardons Abby.

In Earth Skills, Jackson tells Abby that witnesses saw the dropship launch, causing rumors to spread about the Delinquents being sent to the ground. Abby orders Jackson to allow the Council to worry about the people on the Ark and he tells her that 23 more wristbands have gone dark after what seems to be a pain response. Though Jackson believes that it could be from exposure to radiation, Abby is convinced that there is another explanation for it. Their discussion is interrupted by the arrival of Jaha and Kane.

Later, Jackson accompanies Abby to the mess hall where he points out Kane lobbying for votes with the Council members. Jackson suggests that they do the same thing, but Abby only states that they'll have their chance at the briefing. Raven Reyes arrives, asking about the viral quarantine that was used as an excuse to keep the departure of the Delinquents a secret. After Raven makes it clear that she doesn't believe their story and intends to find the truth, Jackson comments on how ballsy she which Abby states reminds her of someone.

With 30 minutes until the Council votes, Jackson reluctantly joins Abby in desperately trying to contact the ground only to be interrupted by Raven hiding in the air ducts. As Jackson prepares to call security, Raven tells the two that the Delinquents aren't dying: they're taking off the wristbands. When Jackson questions why they would do something so reckless, Abby realizes that it's because they told them not to.

In Murphy's Law, Jackson is monitoring the wristband signals when Clarke's suddenly goes out. Jackson tries to comfort Abby over her apparent loss, but Abby refuses to believe the worst has happened, and orders Jackson to get her an analysis of Clarke's vital signs from the past two days.

Later, as Raven installs the pressure regulator Abby got from Nygel, Jackson calls Abby to ask if she took morphine from the clinic. Surprised, Abby asks if an inventory was done already, but Jackson states that Kane was there and warns Abby that he's on his way to Mecha Station to arrest her and Raven.

After Abby's arrest, Jackson is monitoring the wristband signals and is shocked when they suddenly all go out as a result of Monty Green's failed attempt to use them to contact the Ark.

In Twilight's Last Gleaming, Jackson approaches an upset Abby to check up on her after she treats Reese Lemkin. Abby tells Jackson that she just treated a 9-year old girl with optic nerve damage because of chronic oxygen deficiency and who is going blind while there is nothing that Abby can do about it. Upset, Abby snaps at Jackson, asking why he isn't monitoring the radio for Raven, but he points out that they are slammed with patients. Jackson reassures Abby that the radio is still transmitting the automatic hail and she orders him to continue to monitor the radio while she deals with Medical, knowing that making contact with the ground is the only way that they can really help everybody. Later, along with the rest of the Ark, Jackson watches Jake Griffin's message and Abby's broadcast about the coming Culling.

After the Culling, Jackson enters Section 17 with Abby to deal with the bodies of those who died. Jackson observes the aftermath with obvious sorrow and care as he tends to the dead and helps to remove them.

In Contents Under Pressure, Abby enlists Jackson's help with guiding Clarke through treating Finn Collins' wound over the radio. Studying the simulation of the wound that he and Abby create using Clarke's description, Jackson warns Abby that if Clarke is even a hair off, she could lacerate Finn's aorta and as such must remove the knife at a 3 millimeter angle with any more or less possibly being bad. Despite the interruption of storm damage from the hurricane raging around the dropship, Clarke successfully removes the knife safely.

In We Are Grounders (Part 1), Jackson, along with Abby, operates on a woman. Abby is determined to save her, but Jackson wonders what she is saving the woman for, since the Ark is running out of air and they will all be dead within a couple of days. Abby breaks down saying that Clarke hates her because she turned in her husband, Clarke's dad, and got him executed. Jackson comforts her by saying that Clarke doesn't hate her she is just strong willed, and it's that trait that will keep her alive on the ground.

In We Are Grounders (Part 2), when the Ark is brought down to Earth, Jackson is on one of the stations that makes it to the ground.

In The 48, Jackson sees that Kane and the others have arrived at Camp Jaha. When Jackson spots Abby, he rushes to greet her.

In Inclement Weather, Jackson helps Abby with Raven Reyes' surgery.

In Reapercussions, Jackson watches in sadness as Abby is shock lashed by Major Byrne ten times due to committing a crime, and he later helps treat her wounds.

Jackson tends to Abby's wounds

In Human Trials, Jackson assists Abby as she tends to Clarke's wounds. Later, he interrupts an argument between the two, telling Abigail that she is needed in medical.

In Coup de Grâce, Jackson helps with the surgery performed on Emerson. Later, he discovers the presence of Arker blood inside of Emerson, learning that the Mountain Men have already begun harvesting the 47.

In Resurrection, Jackson arrives at Tondc with a group led by Sinclair. Sinclair explains that they saw the missile blast from Camp Jaha, and have come to help. Jackson assists in evacuating Abby and Kane and tends to those wounded in the blast.

In Blood Must Have Blood (Part 1), Jackson is part of Indra's group that is planning to enter Mount Weather through the mines. When Reapers attack, he uses the tone generator to disable them and then injects them with a substance that knocks them unconscious. Later, after hearing the horn signaling the retreat, he watches as Octavia and Indra argue over whether to follow orders or not. Afterward, as Indra and the Grounders leave, he asks Octavia to come home with them. She responds by saying that she has no home. Jackson gives her a bag of supplies and tells her that she'll need it before turning around and departing with the rest of the Arkers.

In Blood Must Have Blood (Part 2), Jackson is seen at Camp Jaha as the Arkers return from Mount Weather. He spots an injured Abby and then rushes forward to assist with the wounded.

In Wanheda (Part 1), Jackson rushes to the gate of Arkadia to greet an injured Jasper and immediately takes him to Medical. Jackson is later seen chasing Jasper down the halls, begging him to stop because he hasn't been cleared from Medical, but Abby sees this and releases him, making him promise to come back in the morning for a checkup. Jackson complains about the twelve waiting patients, four of which who are waiting for contraceptive implant removals.

In Wanheda (Part 2), Lincoln and Octavia bring a dying Nyko to Jackson and Abby. A large amount of blood loss and deep gash requires Nyko to need a blood transfusion. Jackson takes Nyko's blood but realizes that it's Rh null, so none of the Octavia can't give some of her blood to him because Abby says Rh null can only take Rh null. Lincoln offers up some of his blood for Nyko and Jackson takes a sample of Lincoln's blood type, however, he soon finds out that Lincoln's blood type isn't Rh null either. Jackson says there is another option but Abby silences him before he can say what it is. Lincoln wonders what Jackson is talking about, and Jackson suggests Mount Weather since it will have the blood supply necessary for the transfusion. Abby scolds him, pointing out that the Mountain Men bled thousands of Grounders to death so they can't take him there. When Lincoln is asked what he thinks about the idea, Lincoln says that they have to save Nyko, despite knowing that there is a risk that the tensions between the Sky People and Trikru will increase if they take Nyko there. Jackson, Abby, Octavia, and Lincoln prepare to transport Nyko to the Mountain. Once Jackson and Abby save Nyko's life, Jackson points out all of the good that Mount Weather could do for both groups of people. Nyko agrees by saying that he and Lincoln can change the minds of their people and that it's not the places that are evil; it's the people. Abby gives Jackson permission to open Mount Weather back up, and he is greatly pleased by this.

In Fallen, he has taken the City of Light chip and sedates Abby. When Abby awakens he, Jaha and Raven are watching Abby. Raven, possessed by A.L.I.E., begins to cut herself and Abby demands Jackson to stop Raven but he doesn't listen.

In Perverse Instantiation (Part 2), Jackson is one of the people to charge into the throne room in the Polis tower to stop Clarke. Jackson reaches Clarke, but just as Abby is about to be forced to shoot him to save her daughter, Clarke destroys A.L.I.E., freeing Jackson from the AI's control. Along with everyone else, Jackson collapses in tears over everything he has been through and any injuries that he might've suffered.

In Echoes, it is mentioned that he and Nathan Miller are in the Polis tower helping the wounded following the destruction of A.L.I.E..

In The Four Horsemen, he helps Abby with Luna and her people after the get ARS (acute radiation syndrome), resulting in the deaths of everyone but Luna. Jackson expresses surprise when John Murphy steals anti-radiation medicine for them, commenting on how Murphy's father had been floated for a similar crime. However, Luna's people all die despite their best efforts aside from Luna herself which the group realizes is because Luna has Nightblood.

In A Lie Guarded, he travels to Becca's Island with Abby, Raven Reyes, Nathan Miller, John Murphy, Emori, Luna and Nyko to experiment with Nightblood.

In The Tinder Box, he finds out the reason that Nightblood was first created. He and Abby then see Raven having a seizure.

In God Complex, Jackson and Abby test the new Nightblood serum on the Rock Line Thief. However, while it appears to work at first, the man ultimately dies horribly in the radiation testing chamber. Jackson determines what caused the problem in the first place and helps Abby to fix the problem. After Clarke injects herself with Nightblood instead of Emori, Jackson tests her blood and discovers that Clarke's body is now producing Nightblood on its own. However, Abby destroys the radiation chamber before they can test Clarke's new Nightblood rather than risk her daughter's life.

In Sanctum, he is chosen to go a mission to explore the new world as a part of Expedition 1. Upon landing on the ground, the group is thrilled to find that the air is breathable and the radiation levels are good. He mostly spends his time alongside his boyfriend Nathan Miller while they are exploring. Later, sitting around the campfire he and Nathan relax and talk about their new status as aliens, while they are observing a bug that they caught up in a jar.

As an eclipse approaches, the group notices that a bug they had captured in a jar is becoming extremely violent. Suddenly, a huge swarm of bugs approaches them at high speed. They run to seek shelter while using fire flares to scare off the bugs. Soon, they reach an electric tower with a radiation fence which kills the bugs. Shaw accidentally runs through the electric barrier and gets burned by the radiation. Clarke notices that they are radiation-type shockers and she can go through them because she has Nightblood. She goes through the barriers and disables the tower temporarily to let the rest of the group get inside.

While Miller and Jackson talking to each other sitting on the stairs they get interrupted by Murphy yelling at something. Miller then shouts that someone stole their transport ship and it's now flying away. A couple moments later, Emori starts attacking Murphy out of nowhere. The group quickly comes to save him and notices that Emori turned violent during the eclipse in a manner similar to what's depicted in the "Red Sun Rising" book.

In The Gospel of Josephine, he is arguing with Abby about her obsession with saving Kane since it's impossible to perform a successful surgery before Kane dies. Josephine interrupts them and begins to help Abby, asking Eric to give them some time.

Later, they again are talking about upcoming surgery. He is worried about the fact that Abby haven't slept in 2 days and spends all her time with books, replacing the pills with them. Though Abby had found a solution, Jackson points out that it will take 15 hours and Kane has at most ten minutes when his pod is open. Abby says she needs to bring Kane back because out of all of them, he is the only good person who deserves to live. Abby reminds Jackson that they both stood with Blodreina during the Dark Year while Kane was the only one to stand up to her. Jackson states that he was just doing his job, but Abby states that every war criminal to ever live has said that. Upset, Jackson storms off.

In The Old Man and the Anomaly, he along with the others is sitting in the Tavern and discussing the plan to bring back Clarke and get Josephine out of her. Madi suggests just to kill all the Primes but the group decides to do it in a less bloody way.

Then Emori comes in, and asks for a Shock Collar, but then realizes that she can't just stay away and tells that Clarke will be killed now. Together they begin working on a new plan which involves using Jackson to remove Josephine's Mind Drive.

When Emori makes Josephine to get to the shield, Jackson and Miller are ready to go to them. However Madi kills Miranda Mason and it forces Russell to start the alarm and capture Earth people. Jackson, Miller, Emori, Echo, Murphy and Madi get locked up.

In Ashes to Ashes, Jackson is working on bone marrow extraction from Madi in the Sanctum Lab. Weakend Madi wakes up from anesthesia and tell Jackson that she is hurt and needs help. He unstrains one of her hands and she immediately tries to attack him with a scalpel. Jackson has no choice but sedate her and shout for others to help.

In The Blood of Sanctum, Jackson is used by the Primes alongside Gaia and Madi as hostages to force the crew on Eligius IV to surrender. Jackson works with Raven in an attempt to save Madi by deleting Sheidheda from the Flame only to learn that there is a kill code that will delete the Flame itself to get rid of Sheidheda. Their work is interrupted by Russell arriving to take Madi captive.

Jackson is in the mess hall when Russell arrives to exact revenge with the help from Wonkru, led by the Sheidheda-controlled Madi. Clarke is able to get Madi to seize control and order Wonkru to take Russell and his guards captive, but Sheidheda tries to kill her in revenge. Raven activates the kill code, but Madi doesn't wake up and Jackson determines that her pulse is too weak. Raven recognizes the symptoms and informs everyone that they must remove the Flame. With Clarke shaking too much to do it, Jackson takes the scalpel and surgically removes the remnants of the Flame, causing Madi to wake up. However, they discover that Sheidheda was able to upload himself to an unknown location.

Jackson subsequently returns to Sanctum and is reunited with Miller.

In From the Ashes, Eric is seen having a picnic along with his friends at the Farmhouse. During Raven's and Niylah's word about friends they lost, a traumatized Jackson becomes upset when he feels like Murphy was pretending that he had nothing to do with Abby's death. Murphy appears ashamed and tries to apologize to Clarke. The group tries to continue their rare moment of calm and later prepares for a walk to the palace.

In False Gods, Jackson discusses with Miller the anger he feels over Abby's death and the fact that he shouldn't want "Russell" to die - but he does. Miller listens supportively. Later in the episode, Jackson treats "Russell's" injuries though he is still angry with him for killing many innocent people.

In Welcome to Bardo, Jackson treats Emori and Murphy for their heavy radiation exposure while repairing Sanctum's nuclear reactor and Nelson's burns from trying to save one of the Faithful from self-immolation. Jackson argues about stopping the Faithful from committing suicide and clears Murphy for duty to pose as Daniel Lee while Emori is still too weak from the radiation to help.

After its revealed that Sheidheda has taken over Russell Lightbourne's body, Indra calls in Jackson to surgically remove Russell's Mind Drive so that the Dark Commander can never be resurrected again once he does die. Though Jackson goes to give Sheidheda something for the pain, Indra tells him not to and to let Sheidheda feel it "for Abby." Jackson agrees and painfully removes the Mind Drive from Sheidheda's neck.

In Nakara, Jackson joins Murphy and Emori in expressing concern for Madi. They approach Indra and firmly tell her they disagree with her plan of having Madi act as commander. When Madi experiences a panic attack and runs off, Jackson follows after her.

In The Queen's Gambit, Jackson goes over some of Madi's drawings with her and discusses Madi's fear with her. Emori enlists his help to reunite the Children of Gabriel with their families by performing DNA tests, but Jackson recognizes that Emori is driven by her own abandonment by her parents. Emori refuses to be dissuaded and promises to get Jackson the remaining DNA he needs to identify the families.

In The Flock, Jackson is with Murphy when Nikki makes a broadcast demanding that Murphy, Sheidheda and Raven turn themselves over. Jackson attempts to keep Murphy from doing anything stupid though he insists that they need to do something to save everyone. Murphy points out that Wonkru won't listen to him, Murphy is 150 pounds wet and Jackson can't fight at all. Indra returns at that point, having overheard their conversation and reveals that they found only bodies at Gabriel's camp and no sign of their friends. Jackson remains concerned about Miller, but Indra tells the two that their friends have Gaia with them and are resourceful while they must deal with the problem at hand. Jackson is left behind when Murphy and Indra go to reluctantly get Sheidheda's help with the problem.

In The Stranger, Murphy brings the hiding massacre survivors clothing, medical supplies and instructions from Jackson who is secretly supporting Murphy's group. Murphy tells Jeremiah and Trey that Jackson is also working on getting them some food.

In Blood Giant, Jackson is treating an injured patient when Penn arrives to evacuate him as a Red Sun eclipse begins. Jackson gives the men instructions as Gabriel arrives and he tells the other men to leave Gabriel be. Jackson notices Gabriel's strange behavior as he is distracted by a hallucination of Josephine Lightbourne and follows Gabriel to the lab, ordering Penn and his men to get Jackson's patient to Ryker's Keep. Jackson questions where the others are, but Gabriel only states that its a long story. Jackson asks after Miller and Gabriel, though confused, tells Jackson that he's fine and safe though he's not on Sanctum.

Gabriel finds the anti-toxin, but discovers that its almost empty and Jackson explains that the Primes had used it to reach Eligius IV when Russell enacted the Adjustment Protocol. Gabriel offers the only dose to Jackson, but he points out that he doesn't know how to make more. Gabriel tells Jackson that he's used to working under the influence of the toxin while Jackson is not and he really needs Jackson's help. Jackson begins helping Gabriel create more of the anti-toxin, but notices Gabriel's continuing strange behavior due to his hallucination of Josephine.

After making the anti-toxin, Jackson and Gabriel race to the Great Hall where they find the aftermath of the slaughter of the Disciples by Indra. Jackson gives Indra the anti-toxin, ending her hallucinations and watches as Indra faces off with the severely wounded and tied up Sheidheda. Indra chooses not to kill the Dark Commander and instead to let him die of his wounds. After slicing Sheidheda's face, Indra orders that nobody is to treat the Dark Commander's wounds. Without hesitation, Jackson states that he wasn't planning on it which Gabriel agrees with.

After the others return with the Flame, Jackson watches passively as Gabriel first tries to fix the Flame and then destroys it. Gabriel then has Jackson give him the anti-toxin. After Cadogan opens the Temporal Anomaly to the others, Jackson joins the group in traveling through to rescue their friends.

In The Dying of the Light, after the Disciples' bomb collapses part of the bunker, Jackson and Raven rush to check on Murphy and Emori. Jackson determines that Murphy most likely has a concussion, but Murphy refuses treatment in favor of finding Emori. When the three uncover Emori, they discover that she has been impaled by rebar. Jackson cuts her free, but they discover that she also has a leg wound that Jackson is forced to cauterize. When Raven brings back a gurney and what medical supplies she can find, Jackson warns that he needs to operate on Emori if he's going to save her life, but can't do it with what he has Earth. As a result, they must get her back to Sanctum. Raven reveals that the Disciple helmet showed her that the Anomaly Stone is somewhere in the rec room and suggests that they search for it.

Jackson, Murphy and Raven search the rec room, eventually discovering the Anomaly Stone buried under the floor with an Azgeda symbol on top of it. Jackson warns the other two that if they don't get Emori to Sanctum soon, she won't make it. As Murphy and Raven work to excavate the Stone with sledgehammers, Jackson continues to treat Emori. Concerned by her attitude, Jackson takes over for Raven, privately asking Raven to speak to her friend and keep her spirits up as it could be important to her recovery. Realizing what Jackson means, Raven complies while Jackson joins Murphy in smashing through the floor.

The two men finally hit the Anomaly Stone, but Emori suddenly stops breathing. Jackson quickly begins CPR, stating that he can keep her blood circulating, but they need to get back to Sanctum immediately. As Jackson works to keep Emori alive, Murphy and Raven finish uncovering the Stone enough to use it to open the Anomaly back to Sanctum. Jackson hops on the gurney to continue CPR and Murphy thanks him. Jackson declares that they aren't losing anyone else and Murphy promises that they will return for Miller and the others. Murphy and Raven push the gurney carrying Jackson and Emori through the Anomaly to Sanctum.

Personality[]

Jackson, like most everyone on the Ark, is a law abiding citizen. He expresses no desire to break the rules, as shown when he refuses to give the Chancellor more anesthesia. Jackson will even voice his opinion when someone else tries to break the rules. However, Jackson also cares for his friend Abigail Griffin and shows a high level of devotion to her.

He seems to have a strong moral compass and does not waver from his ideals and morals. He is known for his gentleness, which stands in contrast to the often-brutal world he lives in. Only once in the series do we see him lose his temper; in The Gospel of Josephine, he and Abby have a conflict and he gets exasperated. The rest of the time, however, Jackson appears calm. Even during his conflict with Abby, he leaves the room rather than continue to argue; Jackson appears to prefer to keep the peace. Abby's death has impacted him greatly as Season 7 begins, causing him to be heartbroken and desire Russell’s death for what he did to Abby.

He is also shown to display bravery. In the Season 7 episode "The Stranger", he risks the wrath of Sheidheda by bringing food and supplies to Murphy's group of Sanctumites in hiding.

Physical Appearance[]

Jackson has an olive complexion, dark brown eyes, and black hair. He wears simple clothing. Jackson has a thin build. He seems to be of an Indian descent.

Starting in Season 5, after the time jump, he has facial hair.

Relationships[]

Abigail Griffin[]

On the Ark, Abigail is a good friend and co-worker of Jackson's. Although they do not always see eye to eye, the two generally get along very well. Jackson listens to Abby and respects her, even when they disagree on the course of action to take, such as in the "Pilot" when Abigail breaks the law to save the life of Chancellor Thelonious Jaha. Jackson seems to trust Abigail more than any other Council member, including the Chancellor. When Marcus Kane searches for Abby, suspecting she is doing something illegal with Raven Reyes, Jackson calls her to warn her allowing Raven to have enough time to launch the repaired escape pod while Abby stays on the Ark. On what they think are their last few days to live ("We Are Grounders (Part 1)"), Abby and Jackson are seen together operating on a young girl who was hurt in the bomb blast on Unity Day. When the surgery isn't going well Jackson says they, "never should've opened her back up," Abby fight for the girl's life, but she can't be saved. As the heart monitor goes silent and the child dies on the table Abby says, "I failed," and Jackson tries to comfort her while she cries, telling her Clarke doesn't hate her and is just "strong-willed like her mom." He then sends her out of the operating room.

The two continue to work closely together throughout the series as well as demonstrate that they care about each other. In "Red Queen," Abby tells Jackson that she's happy that he and Miller are in a relationship. During Season 6, Jackson and Abby have a falling out over the actions they took in the bunker, but they reconcile before the season's ending.
